Unbound Voices: A Theatrical Encounter with Literature
Experience literature come to life in a night of performance, mystery, and conversation.

An Unforgettable Evening Where Books Speak for Themselves.
Saturday, September 27, 2025 @ 6:00 PM
Hub City Bookshop, Spartanburg, SC
ArtsUp SC, in partnership with the Hub City Writers Project and Bookshop, presents Unbound Voices: A Theatrical Encounter with Literature—a dynamic, theater-in-the-round experience that brings literature to life in surprising and thought-provoking ways. Through performance, mystery, and dialogue, the event aims to spark meaningful conversations about censorship, identity, and the role of literature in shaping cultural empathy.
Professional actors will perform dramatized passages from powerful books without revealing the titles. Following the readings, an engaging dialogue will happen between the audience and a panel of local literary experts. The experts will be asked to share the themes of the passage, why they selected it, and invite attendees to guess the book’s identity. The evening is designed to celebrate intellectual freedom, challenge assumptions, and build community through shared literary exploration.
How It Works

Intimate Performance
Gather in a close-knit, in-the-round setting as actors deliver compelling performances from unknown literary works.

Expert Insights
After each reading, a panel of local authors, educators, and librarians will discuss the passage’s powerful themes of justice, identity, and resilience.

The Big Reveal
Join the conversation! The audience is invited to share thoughts and guess the book’s identity before its title and context are finally revealed.

Community Dialogue
The evening culminates in a group discussion on how literature fosters empathy, challenges assumptions, and strengthens our community.
